After over  25 years of discussion beginning in the 1990s with NYS DEC and 6 Years after the forming of the Adirondack Powder Skier Association Inc.  BackCountry Skiers may finally have some resolution on the Wright Peak Ski Trail.  Approved by the NYS Conservation Department in the 1930s following a Public Comment Period the Wright Peak Ski Trail was once a separate Ski Trail from the Whales Tail Ski Trail to the Summt of Wright Peak. With very few BackCountry Skiers in the 1970s DEC decided to convert the lower half of this trail into a shared hiking trail. The accompanying photos taken in 2016 show the Boulder/Rock Staircase/ Drainage Ditch filled lower section of the shared hiking trail as well as the fern/ moss covered upper section of the Skier Only Ski Trail. The Glory Ski shot was taken in the Winter of 2016-17 on the Upper Skier Only Ski Trail section.

Besides the Safety Issue of Skiers hitting the hidden boulders under the Snow on the lower shared hiking trail section there's also the Safety Issue of Collisions with Snowshoeing or Barebooting Postholing Winter hikers headed to and from  Algonquin or Wright Peak on this popular shared hiking trail. It's a safety issue for both Skiers and Winter Hikers and NYS DEC has proposed the simple solution of rerouting the Wright Peak Ski Trail off of the shared Hiking Trail  thus reestablishing the separate Skier Only Ski Trail approved by NYS in the 1930s all the way back down to the Whales Tail Ski Trail.

****Please voice your support for this Wright Peak Ski Trail /Whales Tail Ski Tail Reroute UMP Amendment Proposal.

This Proposal is also Conditional on the Passing of the BackCountry Ski Trail Standards and Maintenance Guidance MOU Document and Accompanying State Land Master Plan Amendment defining BackCountry Ski Trails, Skin Tracks , and Open Woods Ski Route.

****Please also voice your support to quickly approve these Documents and Amendments that were developed by a joint working group initiated by the Adirondack Powder Skier Association in 2014-15.

The Adirondack Powder Skier Association has also proposed :

-Safer Separate Reroutes of the Marcy Ski Trail and Whales Tail Ski Trails which were both approved by the Conservation Department in the 1930s and were also converted mostly to shared hiking trails in the 1970s.

-Safer Separate Skier Access Trails from ADK Mountain Clubs ADK LOJ  To Avalanche Lake and Lake Arnold  via Marcy Dam.

-Safer Separate Skier Access Trails to the Adirondack Mountain Clubs Johns Brook Lodge Huts from the Garden Parking Lot and extending in the Lower Elevations up the Orebed Trail to the Base of the Orebed /Saddleback Slides.

-Safer Separate Skier Access to the Boquet River Leanto from the Round Pond Trailhead and extending to the Base of the North Slides of Dix Mountain via a looping Skier Only Ski Trail in the Lower Elevation North Facing Hardwoods.

-Safer Separate Skier Access near the ADK Mountain Clubs Johns Brook Lodge Huts via a looping Skier Only Ski Trail in the Lower Elevation North Facing Hardwoods of Short Job Mountain off the Orebed Trail.

-Safer Separate Skier Access via a looping Skier Only Ski Trail in the Lower Elevation Northern Hardwoods of Phelps Mountain off of the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.

-Safer Separate Skier Access via a looping Skier Only Ski Trail in the Lower Elevation East Facing Hardwoods of Santanoni Mountain off of the existing logging road.

-Safer Separate Skier Access via a looping Skier Only Ski Trail in the Lower Elevation North Facing Hardwoods of Ragged Mountain.

-Safer Separate Skier Access via 3 Looping Skier Only Ski Trails in the Lower Elevation North and East Facing Hardwoods off of the Gulf Brook Road.
